Abstract

Obstetric hemorrhage represents a vital risk for women, especially postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), it is one of the main causes of maternal mortality worldwide and in Ecuador. This can occur at any stage of pregnancy, during childbirth or, more frequently, in the postpartum period. PPH is classified as primary if it occurs between 24 hours, and as secondary if it occurs after 24 hours and 12 weeks postpartum. Despite medical advances, many existing protocols for its management are outdated, limiting their effectiveness. The objective of this research is to determine the nursing protocol for the care of patients with postpartum hemorrhage admitted to the ICU. This study focused on the exhaustive review of 19 documents, including guidelines, clinical protocols, theses and other related texts with the objective of proposing an updated protocol based on the most recent evidence in the management of PPH in intensive care units (ICU). The findings highlight the importance of standardizing nursing practices, which would improve care, prevent complications, and reduce mortality rates associated with PPH.
