Application of tactical urban planning for safe mobility in urban environments. Case study
Keywords:
tactical urbanism, signage, urban development, community participationAbstract
The project focused on implementing tactical urbanism on Atahualpa Avenue in La Carolina neighbourhood of Rumiñahui, based on the perceptions of road users and with the participation of the local government to improve signage and road safety. The methodology was developed using a mixed methodological approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative methods using participatory action research, coordinating efforts between the Rumiñahui Higher Technological Institute and the GAD Rumiñahui. The urban diagnosis carried out through surveys of 316 people revealed a notable familiarity of the community with horizontal signage, but also a negative perception of road safety and a high level of ignorance of the concept of tactical urbanism. The intervention carried out corresponded to a tactical urbanism proposal at the pedestrian crossing of Atahualpa Avenue and 8 de Febrero Street, under the MAPT, which is a micro-XS approach, oriented towards neighbourhood-scale road infrastructure with high pedestrian flow, under a design with high-traffic paint in bright colours and photoluminescent pigments. Finally, tactical urbanism, applied on a micro-territorial scale, is positioned as a replicable model for interventions in other sectors of Rumiñahui, integrating sensitive urban design with active social participation and efficient institutional management, aimed at guaranteeing the right to safe, dignified and inclusive mobility.
