Pedagogical and Research Management as the axis of the University's "Third Mission"

Abstract

For Higher Education, engagement with society, teaching, and innovation are part of the "Third Mission." This has become a strategic imperative for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) worldwide, and particularly in Ecuador. This "Third Mission" is complemented by the substantive processes of teaching and research, making the university a fundamental factor for the socioeconomic and sustainable development of its environment. Pedagogy must go beyond the simple transmission of knowledge; it must focus on the development of soft and research skills that enable future teaching professionals to identify and solve real problems in their environment. Active methodologies such as service learning (SLL) and participatory action research were used, directly connecting the classroom with the needs of the community. The "Third Mission" and the incorporation of these trends implies a strategic review of the pedagogical and research management processes for the (IES) of the world, being essential to analyze how the curricular programs are incorporating training in applied research and in the competencies for social connection.
